The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the 'Toy Train', is a 2 feet (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between Siliguri and Darjeeling in the Indian state of West Bengal. This 88 km (54.7 mi) long railway was built between 1879 and 1881 and is the first and still the most outstanding example of a hill passenger railway. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.
The railway begins at New Jalpaiguri and passes through the picturesque town of Kurseong before arriving at Darjeeling. On the way, it passes through breathtakingly beautiful tea gardens, villages and forests. While travelling this route, the major attractions include the Batasia Loop, the majestic Ghoom Monastery, and the Pahadi River.
The Batasia Loop is a spiral railway track located at 2,258 m (7,407 ft). From here, one can get a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga mountains. The Ghoom Monastery is the highest railway station in India and is located at a height of 8,000 ft, and it is known for its 15 ft tall statue of the Maitreya Buddha. The Pahadi River is a river which passes under the railway track near Kurseong.
