Gonjang Monastery

Gonjang Monastery, also known as Gonjang Karphuk, is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the eastern part of Sikkim, India. It is situated at a distance of around 7 km from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim.

The monastery was established in 1981 by the revered meditation master H.E. Tingkye Gonjang Rinpoche. It is known for its tranquil surroundings and peaceful ambience, making it an ideal place for meditation and spiritual contemplation.

Tibetan style inspires the architecture of Gonjang Monastery, and the prayer hall houses a statue of Guru Rinpoche or Padmasambhava, the Indian sage who introduced Buddhism to Tibet. The monastery also has a large collection of sacred texts and scriptures.

One of the main attractions of Gonjang Monastery is the annual Cham Dance festival, which takes place during the 10th month of the Tibetan calendar. During this festival, the monks perform elaborate mask dances depicting good triumph over evil.

Visitors can also attend meditation and teachings sessions at the monastery, led by the resident monks. The sanctuary also offers accommodation facilities for those who wish to stay longer and deepen their spiritual practice.

This glacial lake is located about 37 km from Gonjang Monastery and is one of Sikkim's most popular tourist destinations. You can enjoy boating or take a walk around the lake.
