Lodhi Fort, also known as the Purana Qila, is a historic fort in Ludhiana, Punjab, India. The fort was constructed during the reign of the Lodhi dynasty in the 15th century and was later renovated and expanded by the Mughals. The fort served as an important military stronghold during the Mughal era and played a significant role in the battles between the Mughals and the Afghans.
The Lodhi Fort is spread over around 6 acres and surrounded by a moat that was once filled with water. The fort has four main gates, each adorned with beautiful carvings and intricate designs. The gates are named after the four main directions - the Delhi Gate, the Lahori Gate, the Ajmeri Gate, and the Ferozepur Gate.
Inside the fort are several buildings and structures that reflect the architectural styles of the Lodhi and Mughal periods. The main palace complex is in the centre of the defence and consists of several buildings and courtyards. The palace is built in the typical Mughal style, with red sandstone and marble used extensively in its construction.
The fort also houses a mosque known as the Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque, built by the Mughal emperor Sher Shah Suri in the mid-16th century. The mosque is a magnificent structure with a high central dome and two smaller domes on either side. The interior of the mosque is decorated with intricate designs and calligraphy.
The fort is the Baoli, or step-well, built during the Lodhi period. The Baoli is a seven-story well used to store water and served as a cool retreat during the hot summer months.
