Ajanta's History
The Ajanta Caves were built between the 2nd century BCE and 480 or 650 CE. According to historian Walter M. Spink (Satavahana Period and Vkaka Period), the caverns were erected in two phases. Some caverns were never finished, while others were only partially built.
Ellora Caves, on the other hand, are newer, dating back to the 5th and 10th centuries CE. The caverns of Ellora are separated into three sections: Hindu Caves, Jain Caves, and Buddhist Caves.
The Ajanta Caves location was eventually abandoned and became overgrown with forest until 1819, when a British officer rediscovered it. Ellora Caves, on the other hand, has always received the attention it deserves. Today, the Ajanta and Ellora Caves have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site, as stated in 1983.
