The Banavasi Madhukeswara Temple is a 9th-century marvel located in Banavasi in Karnataka. Mayura Sharma commissioned it from the Kadamba dynasty, one of Karnataka's oldest temples. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, with a large Shivalingam at the centre of the temple complex. On either side of the Shivalingam are Nandi bulls, while other shrines in the complex are dedicated to Goddess Parvati, Murugan and Vishnu.
The temple structure comprises a central shrine, mandapa and a gopuram. The main entrance is from the east, with four more entries from the north, South, west and southeast. The temple is adorned with various sculptures and stone carvings, including the navagraha images, gods and goddesses, and intricate carvings of birds, animals and plants.
One of the main attractions of the temple is the two inscriptions, one from the Kadamba period and the other from the Hoysala period. These inscriptions provide valuable information about the temple's history and patrons. There are many options to explore places near the Banavasi Madhukeswara Temple.
