The Dagshai Jail Museum is a historic site in Dagshai, a small hill station in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, India. The museum is housed in the premises of the erstwhile Dagshai Jail, which was established by the British in 1849. The jail was used to imprison soldiers, political prisoners, and convicts during the colonial era.
The Dagshai Jail Museum was established in 1988 to preserve and showcase the rich history of the jail and the surrounding area. The museum is spread across several buildings and contains a collection of artefacts, photographs, and documents that glimpse the past.
One of the museum's highlights is the collection of jail cells, which have been preserved in their original state. Visitors can walk through the cells and see the conditions in which prisoners were kept, including the narrow beds, small windows, and lack of amenities.
The museum also houses exhibits on the history of the jail, the role of Dagshai in the Indian independence movement, and the life and times of Mahatma Gandhi. There is also a section dedicated to the soldiers who served in the Indian Army, with displays of uniforms, weapons, and other military memorabilia.
In addition to the exhibits, the Dagshai Jail Museum also offers guided tours, educational programs, and cultural events throughout the year. The museum is open to visitors every day except Mondays and public holidays.
This historic cemetery is next to the Dagshai Jail Museum and contains the graves of British soldiers who served in India during the colonial era.
